Pears are long-lived, attractive
trees that work well in Arkansas
landscapes and produce fruit for home
owners. In general, pears do not have
as many pests as apples and are
commonly grown by homeowners
without pesticides. Selected varieties
produce good fruit and present few
management problems. The three
basic types of pears grown in the
United States are European or French
pears, Oriental hybrids and Asian
pears. The common pears include such
popular varieties as ‘Bartlett,’ ‘Bosc’
and ‘D’Anjou’. These and other
common European varieties are
especially noted for their excellent
fresh eating quality. However, the
susceptibility of European pears to
fire blight limits their use.

Production Guide for
Commercial Strawberries
Profi table strawberry production requires careful attention
to many cultural practices. Variety, selection, weed control, frost control, and winter protection are of particular importance. Renovation, fertility, and disease and insect control also are important if production is to be profi table. In addition to cultural practices, you must consider potential markets and methods of marketing before establishing a strawberry planting. Harvest labor, family or hired, and harvest supervision also need to be considered.

The total production of apples of 11.96 million tonnes
was achieved in a planted area of 575,796 ha in the 25
European Union countries in 2005 (1).
Indicators of conventional use of pesticide in apples in
Europe are difficult to find in the scientific literature. We
opted to provide one case study on the national level (for
the UK) that might illustrate the current situation in conventional
apple production in Europe. The data originates from
a survey about the overall use, extent and quantities of
pesticides used in Great Britain in 2004 carried out by the
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and
The Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs
Department (9).

Grapes are one of the most ancient crops known to
humans. They can be eaten fresh as table grapes or
enjoyed in a variety of products such as juice, jelly, raisins,
and the ultimate processed grape product, wine—created
from the controlled fermentation of grape juice. [For
information on home winemaking, refer to Winemaking as
a Hobby (AGRS-049), available through Penn State county
extension offices.] Grapes are a wonderful crop to grow in
the backyard. Many species are native to North America
and are extremely easy to grow, whereas others (primarily
wine grapes) are natives of Europe and can present a true
horticultural challenge to the backyard grower. Because
grapes are vines, the form to which they are trained is
limited only by the grower’s imagination—from arbors
to fences to more standard trellis systems, grapes can be
trained to conform to many shapes and sizes.

PAPAYA (Carica papaya)  is one of the very popular tropical fruits
