The skeletal framework of the body is composed of
at least 206 bones and the associated tendons,
ligaments, and cartilages. The skeletal system has a
variety of important functions, including the support of
soft tissues, blood cell production, mineral
and lipid storage, and, through its relationships
with the muscular system, the support and movement
of the body as a whole. Skeletal system disorders can
thus affect many other systems. The skeletal system is in
turn influenced by the activities of other systems. For example,
weakness or paralysis of skeletal muscles will lead to a weakening
of the associated bones.
