Although drug use among young people declined in some categories during the 1997
school year, recent drug rates continue their upward climb. According to the 1997-98
PRIDE survey, drug use among adolescents has more than doubled since the beginning of
the decade.1 These short-term and long-term trends are both critical to gaining a clear
picture of the extent of youth involvement in illicit drug use today.
