The Intensive Care Unit at Monash Medical Centre Clayton is a 20 bed combined adult and paediatric
unit with a six bed dedicated paediatric section. We have extensive Clinical Nurse Educator support
including a full-time dedicated paediatric ICU Clinical Nurse Educator.
The unit cares for critically ill patients and is considered unique in Australia for providing an extensive
range of services. Specialised services include cardiothoracics, renal, neurology, obstetrics, surgical and
general adult and paediatric care.
 Nursing staff within our department practice at an advanced level. We have many protocol-driven, nurse
initiated activities that our nursing staff manage in their day to day patient care. Our nursing care includes
complex modalities such as invasive and non-invasive ventilation, advanced haemodynamic monitoring,
inotropic therapy, continuous veno-venous haemodiafiltration and intra-aortic balloon pumping. Patient
treatments with extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and nitric oxide ventilation are also
implemented within our ICU.
The Clayton ICU has a commitment to positive patient outcomes and nursing excellence. Our outreach
nursing service ensures that our patients and their loved ones experience a smooth transition from the
ICU environment to the general ward areas. This service provides a high level of clinical support to the
general ward nursing staff and covers the Medical Emergency Team (MET) service.
